Wenham — Donald P. Hayes, 81, beloved husband of the late Barbara (Maihos) Hayes, died peacefully with family Monday, January 21, 2013, at Radius Health Care Center in Danvers. Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Stanley and Teresa (Peyton) Hayes. He was raised in Beverly and was a member of the Beverly High School, Class of 1951.
An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country during the Korean Conflict as a member of the U.S. Navy on the Destroyer USS Soley DD707, and later joined the Surface Anti-Submarine Development Detachment. Mr. Hayes was employed by the City of Beverly for 42 years, and as caretaker of Lynch Park for 36 years, where he cared for and tended to the rose garden until his retirement in 2001. A longtime resident of the Town of Wenham, he was a 51-year member of the American Legion Spear Post #331.
He is survived by one daughter, Alice Arnold of Topsfield; two sons, Timothy Hayes of Beverly, Paul Hayes and his fiancé, Reneau Longoria of Rockport; four grandchildren, Amanda and Emily Hayes, Sam and Amy Arnold; three brothers, Robert Hayes of Beverly, Paul Hayes of San Diego and Richard Hayes of Texas; dear sister-in-law, Dorothea Ingalls of Hamilton, and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Stanley Hayes.
ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Church of St. Paul, 50 Union St., Hamilton, on Monday, January 28, at 9 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
