Richard W. Salo, 84, of Gloucester, husband of the late Theresa P. (Rossignol) Salo, passed away on Tuesday evening, April 17, 2012, in the Seacoast Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
Richard was born in Rockport, MA, on January 28, 1928, the son of the late Nestor and Lydia (Silvonen) Salo.
He attended and graduated from Rockport High School with the Class of 1946.
Enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1948 brought him into the Korean War, where he served his country proudly for over six years. Richard was a Staff Sergeant with the weather squadron.
When he was honorably discharged from the Air Force he started working for the U. S. Postal Service and continued there for 24 years until his retirement. Even after retiring he worked for L.E. Smith Hardware and Lumber in Rockport. He was also a weather watcher for WCVB News Center 5 in Boston for many years and was granted the title, “Weather Watcher of the Year” for 1986. Richard also spent thousands of hours volunteering at Addison Gilbert Hospital delivering mail, flowers and wheeling patients to their appointments. Watching the Red Sox play was a favorite pastime of his. He will be known for his great sense of humor and being a prolific joke teller.
Richard is survived by his daughter Pam January and her main squeeze of 30 years, Mark Ruane of Lynn, sons, Dana Salo and his wife, Karen of Gloucester, Lary Salo and his wife, Calandra of Rockport; six grandchildren, Derek January and his wife, Nicole of Swampscott, Jeffrey January and his wife, Maggie of Lynn, Meredith and Kirsten Salo of Gloucester, Aaron and Taya Salo of Rockport; three great-grandchildren, Ryan, Dylan and Madison January.
He was pre-deceased by his 15 brothers and sisters.
ARRANGEMENTS: His visiting hours will be held in the Burgess & Mackey Funeral Home, 201 Main St. Rockport, on Saturday, April 21, from 9-11:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Family and friends are cordially invited.
His burial will be in Locust Grove Cemetery, Gloucester.
