Gloucester — Winifred R. (Noble) Purdy, 88, died peacefully on September 22, 2013, at the family home built by her husband on Goose Cove. She was the wife of the late Lt. Col. Fred D. Purdy Sr., USAF Ret.
Born in Gloucester on August 12, 1925, she was the daughter of Madge and William Noble. She was a lifelong resident of Gloucester, and graduate of the Gloucester High School, class of 1943, and trained as a beautician at Wilfred Academy.
Winnie proudly attended her grandchildren's various activities in Gloucester and throughout the Northeast. She enjoyed vacationing with her family in New Hampshire, and traveling to Maine with her lifelong neighborhood friends. Some of her favorite pastimes included knitting, cryptoquote, video games, and remaining connected with family on Facebook.
She is survived by her brother, William Noble, husband of the late Dorothy Noble; sister, Marjorie Morse, wife of the late Stephen Morse; daughter, Marjorie Jewell, wife of the late William Jewell; daughter, Kathleen Purdy; and her grandchildren, David and Erin Jewell, Michael and Elizabeth Jewell, Christopher Jewell, Jeremy and Cassandra Jewell, Zachari Jewell, Nicole Jewell, Elizabeth and Matthew Howell, and Tristan Colangelo and his fiancée, Anita Hertell Brennan. She greatly enjoyed her eight great-grandchildren, Makenzie, Mya, Colby, Keagan, Madison, and Wyatt Jewell, and Malcolm and Ivy Howell. She was also predeceased by her beloved son, Fred D. Purdy Jr.; brother, Roy Coull; and sister, Letitia Small.
ARRANGEMENTS: Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service to be held on Saturday, September 28, at 3 p.m., at the Annisquam Village Church, 820 Washington Street. The family has planned a private burial service under the direction of the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester. In lieu of flowers, donations in Winifred’s honor may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
