James F. Whalen Jr., 69

Gloucester — James F. Whalen Jr. 69, husband of Sheila A. (Rossi) Whalen, of Gloucester, passed away on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at his home.

Born in Cambridge on May 20, 1943, he was the son of the late James F. Whalen Sr. and Helen (Kowolski) Whalen.

Jim was a graduate of Cambridge Rindge High School and graduate of Boston College where he was a standout Tight End on the football teams. He was drafted by the Boston Patriots and played from 1965 to 1969. He was named All Pro in 1965 and 1968. He then played tight end for the Denver Broncos from 1970 to 1972 and in his last year played for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1973.

For his outstanding career, Jim was named to the City of Cambridge Hall of Fame, Boston College Hall of Fame and the Boston Patriots All Time Team for the 1960s.

Following his football career, Jim worked as a salesman for Ruby Wine and Somerville Lumber. He later worked for Sherwin Williams and the Home Depot before retiring.

In his spare time, Jim became an avid gardener and recently enjoyed photography.

In addition to his wife Sheila, he is survived by his son Christopher and his wife Lauren of Manchester-by-the-Sea; and his sister Rosemary Plauski of Hull.

ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral service will be held in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester on Saturday, December 22nd at 10:30 a.m. Family and friends are invited to attend.

Visiting hours will precede the service on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The burial will be held private.
