Salvatore J. " Small Salt" Frontiero, 83 husband of the late Irene P. Torrisi Frontiero, of 4
Nautical Heights, Gloucester died on Monday afternoon, February 20th, 2012 surrounded
by his loving family.
He was born in Gloucester on September 27,1928 son of the late
Gerome Frontiero of Boston and Beatrice Sinagra Frontiero of New York. He was born
and raised in Gloucester and attended Gloucester schools leaving in the ninth grade to fish
with his father on the family fishing boat. On November 20,1950, he was drafted into
the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He served proudly in the 8th Army Combat
Engineers. He was Honorably discharged on November 25th,1952.
Following his service in the Army, he returned home to try his hand at fishing his own boat the "Small Salt". Following that, Sammy or "Small Salt" as he was known, began working as a laborer in road construction building route 128. Following the completion of Route 128 Sammy, worked as a carpenters apprentice, building many houses in Manchester-by-the-Sea and Magnolia with then local builder Don Lowe. In the early 70's, Sammy settled into his own carpentry business "Sal Frontiero and Sons". He was proud of his achievement of building his own home in East Gloucester where he loved sharing summer cookouts and
get togethers with his many family members and friends.
Sammy was a devoted father and husband to his wife Irene of 55 years. He enjoyed music and dancing and playing games of nine ball with his five sons on his pool table at his home during Sunday and holiday get togethers. After raising their family, Sal and Irene enjoyed making new friends while traveling the back roads of Cape Ann and New Hampshire on their 1986 Liberty edition Harley Davidson motorcycle. They especially enjoyed Wednesday night coffee rides out of Dunkin Donuts in Gloucester. He loved Gloucester and the ocean and cherished the time he spent fishing as a young man. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his five sons Jerome P. "Jay" Frontiero and wife Susan of
Gloucester, Anthony S. Frontiero Sr. and Wife Diana of Gloucester, Salvatore J. Frontiero
Jr. and wife Jamie of Seabrook NH, Steven J. Frontiero and wife Cheryl of Prattville
Alabama, Christopher P. Frontiero and wife Gina of Clearwater Florida; three daughters
Bridget T. Hartley of Prattville Alabama, Patricia M. Watson and husband Geoffrey of
Rockport and Brenda R. Freitas and husband Joseph of Rowley; 19 grandchildren, 21
great grandchildren and a special son-in-law Robert Beaudette.
ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral will be held from the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, on Wednesday, February 29th at 9:45 a.m. followed by a funeral mass in St. Ann’s Church on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend.
Visiting Hours will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery.
