Buford, Georgia – Gilbert (Gillie) Rose, born in Gloucester Massachusetts December 12, 1921, son of the late Francis and Alice Rose, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2013 at the age of 91. He is survived by his wife Lorraine (Holmes) Rose of Buford GA, his daughter Pamela DiMascio of Buford GA, and his two sons David Rose of Anthem AZ and Glenn Rose of Gloucester MA, his two sisters Alice Kruger of Langdon NH and Josephine Dewar of Pismo Beach CA. He was a career serviceman spending 21 years in the Air Force. He served his country in three wars, World War II, Korean and Vietnam. He was a navigator and bombardier in World War II flying missions over Europe and Germany, were he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery. During the cold war he was assigned a new field, Air Traffic control, after tech school he was sent to participate in the Berlin airlift. He played sports throughout his service career, playing on the all European Basketball Championship teams in 1949, 1950, and 1951. With the exception of his last six years, Gillie was a lifelong resident Gloucester. He actively participated in town hall meetings fighting against higher taxes. His greatest joy was sports; he played Basketball, slow pitch softball and volleyball on city league teams. After his playing days he umpired baseball and softball into his seventies, if you played ball in Gloucester you knew Gillie Rose. He always followed his beloved Red Sox never missing a game. When the Red Sox won the World Series it fulfilled a lifelong wish.
