She was born in Salem, Mass. on March 20, 1930. She was the daughter of the late Lawson Franklin and Gertrude (Hoyt) Tate. Shirley grew up on Rocky Neck. After graduation from Gloucester High School, she furthered her education at Bridgewater State College. When her former husband, Jay, was in the service they lived in Tripoli, Libya. Shirley became a Physical Education teacher. There she taught for a few years in schools in Portland, where she lived for numerous years. She loved the ocean and was an avid sailor, belonging to the Sandy Bay Yacht Club in Rockport and also enjoyed playing tennis as a member of the Manchester Athletic Club. She loved traveling and had visited five continents. She will be missed.Continued ...
