Frederick H. White Jr., 79

Gloucester, MA — Frederick H. White Jr., 79, husband of Priscilla A. (Dionne) White, of Gloucester, passed away on Wednesday evening at the Addison Gilbert Hospital surrounded by his family.

Born in Gloucester February 2, 1934, he was the son of the late Frederick H. White Sr. and Lucille (Patrican) White.

Fred was a graduate of Gloucester High School with the Class of 1952 where he was a standout varsity basketball and baseball player and served as a Lieutenant in the ROTC. Fred went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in education from Boston University and master’s degree from Salem State College. During this time, Fred had also served in the U.S. National Guard for 10 years.

Fred began his teaching career in Sag Harbor in Long Island, N.Y., in 1958. He soon moved back to Gloucester teaching social studies at Central Grammar in 1958, and would later become the assistant principal. Fred then served as assistant principal at the Fuller School, O’Maley School and later Gloucester High School, retiring in 1993. Throughout his career, Fred was well respected by his peers and students. He was revered for his ability to communicate with the thousands of students who passed through his tutelage.

In the summer months, Fred kept busy as former manager of the Annisquam Yacht Club. He was also a long time employee of both the Cape Ann Bowling Alley and Bass Rocks Golf Club, where he also enjoyed playing golf for many years.

Fred’s friendliness and gentle personality will be greatly missed by the many folks he had served in the Gloucester Community.

In addition to his wife Priscilla, he is survived by his three children, Frederick H. White III, husband of the late Cheryl (Arvilla) White, of Gloucester, Leo White and wife, Amy (Devlin), of Mont Vernon, N.H., Marianne Springer and husband, Carsten, of Danville, N.H.; grandchildren, Daniel White, Anna Lee White, Elizabeth White, Emma White, Tess White, Peter Springer, Kristiana Springer; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, the late Reverend Leo Dionne, OMI, Marie Cantwell and Janice Knowles and her husband, Robert, and Dominick Libro, husband of the late Anne Libro, and numerous nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral will be held from the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St., Gloucester, on Monday, April 29 at 9:45 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass in St. Ann’s Church on Monday at 10:30 a.m. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery.
