North Reading, MA — Mary C. (Smith) Baird, 94, of North Reading, formerly of Readville, died at her home on Wednesday, May 8, 2013. She was the loving wife of the late Edward T. Baird.
Born in Dorchester, Mass., on January 17, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Ernest J. and Hertha J. (Andersen) Smith. Mary was raised in Readville, and she attended the Hemenway School, and was a graduate of Boston School of Practical Arts.
Mary worked for William Filene’s before and after her military career. She joined the U.S. Navy as a Wave during World War II, she was a chief storekeeper. After the Navy, she attended Bryant and Stratton Business School, where she met her husband, Edward.
She became a friend of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church in North Reading and using her talents at fundraisers to help build the church.
Mary was a devoted grandmother and great-grandmother and has been a resident of North Reading since 1955.
Family members include her loving daughter, Lauralee Taylor and her husband, George of Gloucester; grandchildren, Jennifer Magazzu of North Reading; Stacey Bunyar and her husband, Mike of Bradford; Jonathan Magazzu of Haverhill; Christian and Gregory Taylor of Gloucester; Alex D. Stevens of Portsmouth, N.H.; great-grandchildren, Juliet Belanger of North Reading, Lia and Miles Bunyar of Bradford, and many nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Christianne J. Stevens and sister of the late Ernest, Alfred, Charlie and Florence Smith and Ella Bazzinotti.
ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 14, at 10:30 a.m., at the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 235 Park St., North Reading. Calling hours will be at the Croswell Funeral Home, 19 Bow St., North Reading, on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. Interment will be private.
