Gloucester, MA — Donald L. Fryklund, 67, beloved husband of Pamela (Chase) Fryklund of 42 years, of Gloucester, passed away unexpectedly at home on Saturday, June 22, 2013.
Born in Medford on June 30, 1945, he was the son of Donald and the late Louise (Walker) Fryklund.
Don grew up in Rockport and graduated from Rockport High School and Wentworth College in Boston. He had served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
In 1971, he started his own construction company with his wife, Pamela and grew it into a very successful business. He later expanded his company to include a composting and topsoil division, which was derived from his tree farm and gardens on his property on Concord Street. He loved and always talked about all the wildlife that inhabited his property and always made sure they were all content. Cutting holes in his barn for the barn swallows, or making sure the wild turkeys, beavers, owls, hawks, and coyotes were happy.
Don had worked extremely hard during his lifetime and was a very active member of the community. For many years, he had devoted much of his time to the Cape Ann Animal Aid Association where he served on the board of directors, and later spearheaded the drive and construction of the new facility on 4 Paws Lane in West Gloucester.
Don enjoyed boat racing, which he did all over the United States, and was a former National Racing Champion and world record holder. He was also a pilot and enjoyed flying small aircraft, and was a former plane owner. His passion for engines and heavy equipment began as a little boy and stayed with him his whole life.
Most of all, Don was an extremely devoted family man, working his business with his family. He truly loved the city of Gloucester. There are no words to describe how much he will be missed. It is the most difficult process to sum him up in words and to limit this column because he has been so much.
In addition to his wife Pamela, he is survived by his daughter, Carrie Fryklund; his father, Donald H. Fryklund; his brother, David Fryklund and wife, Linda of New Hampshire.
