Gloucester — Ruth “Pokie” Rathbone Hildreth, 90, wife of Edward Whitaker Hildreth, of Gloucester, formerly of Mystic, Conn., passed away at her home on Sunday, December 16, 2012.
Ruth was born in Palmer, on December 14, 1922, daughter of the late James Rathbone and Lillian Lyons Rathbone.
Ruth grew up in Palmer, she was a graduate of Abbot Academy and Briarcliff College. She was a model in New York City during World War II, where she met her husband, Ed. They married in New York City on November 9, 1945.
In addition to New York City and Palmer Mass., she had resided in Monson, Mass., Old Saybrook, Conn., Block Island, R.I., Mystic, Conn., and finally Gloucester. She had a great passion for gardening, playing the piano, and being on the water sailing with Ed. She and Ed loved traveling aboard cruise ships, including a four-month circumnavigation, a trip up the Amazon River, and several excursions to Bermuda, Europe, and the Caribbean. Ruth was a very loving wife and mother who possessed a great sense of humor and love of life.
She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Kathleen Barnes and her husband, Eugene F. Barnes III of Gloucester; granddaughter, Glendon Barnes, of Blue Hill, Maine; one niece, Paula Rathbone, three nephews, Stephen, Rick, and Edwin Rathbone; sister-in-law, Connie Rathbone; and several grand nieces and nephews.
Her husband Edward W. Hildreth, three brothers Edwin, Fred, and James Rathbone, sister-in-law Muriel Rathbone, and niece Pamela Rathbone Bilton predeceased her.
ARRANGEMENTS: A memorial service will be held on January 27, 2013 at 2 p.m. in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St. Gloucester. Visiting hours will be held before, from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend.
