James R. White Jr., 73


Essex — James R. White Jr., 73, of Essex, husband of Phyllis M. (Niemi) White, passed away at Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, on Tuesday evening, September 25, with his family at his side.

Jim was born in Gloucester, on May 18, 1939, the son of the late James R. White Sr., and Eunice E. (Elwell) White.

An avid outdoorsman, Jim enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a co-founder of Wildlife Artisans Association, a member of Ducks Unlimited, as well as the Cape Ann Sportsmen’s Club and he was an award winning water fowl carver and had won multiple awards. In 2008, he was awarded the Lifetime of Service Award by the Gun Owner’s Action League. He had a knack for making diamond wrapped decorative fishing rods and also dabbled in scrimshaw.

He is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis, whom he was married to for 52 years; three daughters, Michele Garnett of Hampden, Maine, Lisa Devlin George and her husband, Jeffrey, of Essex, Nicole Sazin and her husband, Scott, of Ipswich; a sister, Jeannine White, and a brother, Richard White, and his wife, Joanne, all of Gloucester; a brother-in-law, Bill Niemi and his wife, Diane, of Gloucester; five grandchildren, Jessica and Stephanie Garnett, Joshua and Amanda Sazin and Michael James White; two great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Collin Boutin; a nephew, whom he considered a son, Keith White and his wife Grace Marie, of Gloucester, Matthew Parsons, whom he thought of as a son and his wife Lisa and their son, Luke James all of Gloucester.

He was predeceased by a daughter, JeanMarie White; a sister, Linda Magnarelli; a nephew, Robert Magnarelli; three grandchildren, Christopher, Michael and Sarah Devlin and his son-in-law, Rick Devlin.

ARRANGEMENTS: In keeping with his wishes, there are no visiting hours and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
