Pietro Taormina, 88


Gloucester, MA — Pietro Taormina, 88, of Gloucester, passed away unexpectedly on Monday evening, April 15, 2013, surrounded by his loving family.

Pietro was born in Terrasini, Sicily on May 25, 1924, son of the late Mercurio and Ninfa (Bologna) Taormina. He was recently predeceased by his loving wife, Guiseppina, of 59 years, and his dear, devoted daughter, Finella.

Pietro loved spending time with his family, especially his loving grandsons, Peter and Sam. Playing cards with his son, Vince, was one of his favorite past times. His vegetable garden, over the years, had given him great pleasure.

During his fishing career, Pietro had fished with many fishing vessels in Sicily and Gloucester. He and his brother, Domenic, were proud owners of the Miss Sandy out of Gloucester harbor for over 15 years until his retirement 20 years ago. In the past, he was a member of the St. Peter’s Club.

Pietro is survived by his loving son, Vincenzo Taormina and his wife, Jennifer (Lupo); son, Mercurio Taormina and his wife, Geraldine (Ferrante); grandsons, Peter and Sam Taormina; and granddaughters, Josiemarie Martinez and Rosemary Russo; brother, Domenic Taormina and wife, Grace; sisters, Elenora D’Angelo, wife of the late Marco D’Angelo, and Grace Novello, wife of the late Anthony Novello, and Pina Taormina; brothers-in-law, Onofrio Maggiore and wife, Angie, and Antonino Lo Iacono and wife, Rosaria of Terrasini, Sicily; sister-in-law, Mimma DiGirolamo of Ficarazzi, Sicily; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Giuseppina (Lo Iacono) who passed away on March 4, 2011, and daughter, Finella, on July 20, 2012. He was also predeceased by a brother, Franco Taormina and sisters, Rosa (Taormina) LoGrasso, Francesca (Taormina) DiMercurio, and Giovanna (Taormina) Maggiore.

ARRANGEMENTS: His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Ann’s Church, Holy Family Parish, on Friday, April 19, at 10:30 a.m.

A visitation will be held prior to the Mass on Friday in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St., Gloucester, from 9 to 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited. The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Adult Foster Care of the North Shore, 63 Middle St., Gloucester, MA 01930.
