William D. "Bill" Jewell, 68

Gloucester — William D. “Bill” Jewell, 68, died early Tuesday morning, February 5, 2013 at the Addison Gilbert Hospital, following an extended illness. He was the husband of Marjorie (Purdy) Jewell.

Born in Portsmouth, N.H. on February 3, 1945, he was the son of the late, Ronald S. and Grace G. (Trenholm) Jewell. He had been a resident of Gloucester since 1948 and was a graduate of Gloucester High School class of 1965.

Bill was a machinist and truly loved his work. He was first employed by Standley Brothers in Beverly. He ultimately became a foreman at Gloucester Engineering, where he worked for over forty years until taken ill. He enjoyed building hotrods, boating and fishing. Spending time in and on the water at Goose Cove was a favorite pastime of his. Bill also enjoyed coaching C.A. Youth Hockey for many years and spending time at their camp in Gardner, Maine.

Having been foster parents to well over fifty children, he and Marge changed the lives of many.

In addition to his wife of forty-six years, he is survived by his sons, David, husband of Erin (Maki) Jewell, Michael, husband of Elizabeth (Noble) Jewell, Christopher Jewell, Jeremy, husband of Cassandra (Valencia) Jewell, Zachari Jewell; a daughter, Nicole Jewell; six grandchildren, Wyatt, Madison, Colby, Keagan, Mya and MaKenzie Jewell; his extended family, Penny Sperry, Johanna Fulford, Elizabeth Crowley and Joseph Richard and their families; his sister, Lucy (Jewell) Carnes; his mother-in-law, Winifred Purdy; his sister-in-law, Kathy Purdy; four nieces and a nephew. He was also predeceased by his son, Jose O. “Joe” Odum; his father-in-law, Fred D. Purdy; and brother-in-law, Fred D. Purdy, Jr.

Highlands and her husband, James, of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; cherished brother of the late Lucille Flynn and her late husband, John; stepfather of Dennis Latham and his wife, Patricia, of Gloucester, and Denise Ekborg and her husband, Dennis, of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; loving "Grampy" of 20 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends.

    Rockport, MA — John Lindsley Crocker, 83, of Rockport, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 5, 2014. John was born in Utica, N.Y., on February 16, 1931, and was the son of the late Lindsley H. and Irene Florence (Bence) Crocker. He had attended Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y., before entering the Trappist Monastery, St. Joseph’s Abbey, in Spencer, Mass. He received a master's degree from Emanuel College in Boston, in Art Therapy and Centering Prayer. John was an artist, who was gifted in painting, photography, poetry and writing. He was a teacher of Centering Prayer and a spiritual director. He spent his last years painting and teaching Centering Prayer. He is survived by his sister, Margot Byrnes and her husband, David, of Miami, Fla., and their children, Tammy Kinsey, Scott, John, and Kevin Byrnes; sister, Sue Lee of Sebastian, Fla., and her children, Debbie Rafuls, Andrew and Craig Lee, and Denise Wagner; a brother-in-law, Gerald Schoemick of Kenmore, N.Y. and his children, John Schoemick and Kerry Killian; also several grand-nieces and grand-nephews; as well as many friends. He was predeceased by his beloved companion, Dorothy Teko; sister, Linda Schoemick; nephew, Martin Schoemick; and grand-nephew, Daniel Byrnes.

Bob trained as a naval aviator during WWII, and graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in chemical engineering. He later earned a master's degree in business from Boston University. He was a chemical engineer by trade, and after working for several large firms, he started and managed his own business, Applied Technology, as a manufacturer’s rep for scientific equipment. Later in life, he taught science and mathematics at the North Shore Community College. He was an avid tennis player, sailor and musician, and had a wide variety of other interests, including all things mechanical and electrical engineering-related, home restoration and boat building.
