Magnolia, MA — Robert E. Blatchford, D.D.S., 76, husband of Lorraine A. (LaDonna) Blatchford, of Magnolia, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 26, 2013, at The Kaplan Family Hospice House, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Gloucester in 1936, and was the son of the late Clarence E. and M. Esther (O’Maley) Blatchford.
He graduated from Gloucester High School in 1954 and from Tufts University in 1958. Dr. Blatchford continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania Dental School, where he was a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Society, graduating in 1962.
Bob served as a Captain in the U.S. Army, and then began private practice in the profession that he loved, dentistry, for more than 50 years, retiring in 2012.
Throughout his life, he was very active in many local groups. He was a member of The Gloucester Rotary Club, where he ultimately served as president. He enjoyed many years with the Barbershop Harmony Society, singing with the Northshoremen, and appeared in multiple productions with the North Shore Players. He spent many hours attempting to perfect his golf game as a member of The Bass Rocks Golf Club, and spent many years as a director at Bank Gloucester.
One of his favorite pastimes was being the “Voice of the Fishermen” at Gloucester High School football and basketball games.
His love for his family and passion for life will never be forgotten.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Lorraine A. (LaDonna) Blatchford, and their sons, H. Scott Blatchford and his wife, Alison, of Canton, Ga., and Kevin R. Blatchford and his wife, Ann M. McCann of Wenham. He was “Papa” to his six grandchildren, Margaret, John, Catherine, Caroline, Remi and Eleanor, all of whom adored him. He was predeceased by his sister, Helen (Blatchford) Enos.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, are on Tuesday, July 30, from 4 to 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited. Services will be private.
