Samuel M. Hopkins, 66

Santa Rosa, NM — Samuel M. Hopkins, age 66, passed away on April, 6, 2013, at the Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, N.M., following a brief illness. Samuel was born on March 20, 1947, in Salem, Mass., son of Jerome and Janet (Ingalls) Hopkins.

Samuel grew up in Essex where he and Sandra were married on October 23, 1985. They moved to Mariaville, Maine, and then to Lakeport, Calif., where he owned and managed the Rainbow Motel. He had many occupations throughout his lifetime. He was a florist, exterminator, bartender and a small business owner. Samuel was always active in his community in Essex where he served on the Planning Board. He was active in the 4H Program in Hancock County, Maine. He and Sandra made their home in Santa Rosa, N.M., in 2002. Sam loved his garden and his beloved dog, Crissy. He loved the outdoors, his plants and his little house on the prairie. In the last few years, his most important job has been Papo to his beloved grandson, Michael Bailey.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Sandra of Santa Rosa, N.M.; daughter, Barbra Bailey; grandson, Michael Connor Bailey, also of Santa Rosa; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Bailey of Lowell, Mass.; stepson, William Bailey of Haverhill, Mass.; his brother, Richard Hopkins and wife, Cheryl, of Topsfield, Mass.; nieces and nephews, Carla Adams and husband, Richard; great-niece and nephew, Heather and Kevin, all of Essex, Mass.; Tom Hopkins and wife, Marci; great-niece, Janet, all of Bedford, Mass., and Betsy Hopkins of North Andover, Mass.; his sister, Meredith Wallace and husband, Vern, of Santa Cruz, Calif.; and his nieces and nephews, Cindy, Scott and Eric, all of California.

ARRANGEMENTS: Cremation has taken place, and a Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Essex, 29 Main Street, Essex, MA, with Rev. Tim Ziegenhals officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Essex, 29 Main Street, Essex, MA 01929.

After her marriage, she and her husband had resided in Arlington, Mass. and Hamden, Conn., before moving to Peabody 48 years ago. She had worked in her earlier years as a comptometer for First National Stores in Somerville. Mary loved to cook and the family enjoyed her famous clam dip. She also traveled with her husband and enjoyed playing Bridge and other card games. In her healthier years, she was a devout communicant of St. Ann’s Church.

  • Helen Atwood, 90

    Formerly of Athol and Gloucester — Helen E. Atwood, 90, of Tarpon Springs, Fla., passed away July 10, 2014. The second child of George and Helen Grant of Athol, Mass., Helen graduated from Athol schools at 15 and from Mass State College, now UMass-Amherst, at 19. She married Milford W. Atwood upon graduation in 1943, and they had three children. That marriage ended in divorce. Helen was a dietician who ran the general’s dining room at the Pentagon during World War II, and served as the dietitian for an elementary school in Gill, Mass. Later, she earned a master’s degree in math education from Salem State College in Salem, Mass., and had a long career as a 7th grade math teacher, retiring in 1987 from Beverly Public Schools in Beverly, Mass. Helen spent more than 30 years as a hospital volunteer, first at Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester, and then at Helen Ellis Hospital in Tarpon Springs. A lifelong church member, Helen was clerk of her church in Massachusetts, served on a pastoral search committee, and taught Sunday school. In Tarpon Springs, she served on board committees for the Green Dolphin Condominium Association. Helen was devoted to her children and grandson, and spent her life making wonderful opportunities available to them. She is survived by her two daughters and their spouses, Fred and Carol Atwood-Lyon of Tarpon Springs and Dover, N.H., and Mark and Sally Hamilton of New Port Richey; and her son and his wife, Skip and Cindy Atwood of Tarpon Springs and Nobleboro, Maine. She is also survived by one grandchild, William Curtis Tawney of Tampa; her sister, Barbara Grant Donahue of Shrewsbury, Mass.; and three nieces. Helen was predeceased by her life partner, Doric J. Alviani of Wenham, Mass.; her brother, G. William Grant of Anaheim, Calif.; and her parents, George and Helen Grant, of Athol.
