Patricia Lawford, sister of President Kennedy, dies

BOSTON (AP) - Patricia Kennedy Lawford, the sister of President John F. Kennedy and wife of actor Peter Lawford, died at her New York home of complications of pneumonia yesterday, according to a family statement. She was 82.

"My sister Pat is irreplaceable," Democratic Sen. Senator Edward M. Kennedy said in a statement. "Everyone who knew Pat adored her. She was admired for her great style, for her love and support of the arts, her wit and generosity - and for the singular sense of wonder and joy she brought into our lives."

Lawford is survived by four children and 10 grandchildren. Memorial and funeral arrangements are pending.

    Born in Gloucester on July 17, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Colonel Frank Henry and Addie (Burnham) Shute. A graduate of the Catherine Gibbs School, Mrs. Friberg was employed as executive secretary to the Dean of Endicott College for many years. She kept meticulous archives of her time at the school.

    Ruth Shorr, 93, of Rockport died Feb. 3, 2012 at Den Mar Nursing and Rehab in Rockport, Mass.

    Born in Boston on Feb. 21, 1918 to Robert MacDonald and Florence Mackie, Ruth traveled extensively throughout her life, first as a child traveling with her actress mother, and in later years as an employee of the US Army Corps of Engineers. During her career Ruth lived and worked in Alaska, Morocco, Italy, Saudi Arabia and New Zealand, finally settling in Rockport in 1983 following her retirement. Ruth’s sister, Jean Lawler, formerly of Rockport, passed away in 2009 in Florida. Ruth is survived by nephews John, Jeffrey, Robert and Daniel Lawler; her nephew Gerald Lawler passed away in 2010.

  • Talk of the Times: Whale watching comes to harbor, Rocky Neck Whale watching isn't a regular activity around Rocky Neck and the Inner Harbor.
    But a handful or two of local residents and visitors were able to do just that for a few hours Thursday afternoon.
    Donna Marchant and her husband Dick were the first to call the Times to report that one or possibly two right whales — obviously lost, not visibly in distress — could be seen first around the area off Smith's Cove, and then across the harbor off Cruiseport Gloucester and the Americold building, behind Gorton's and then off Harbor Loop.

    The Indiana State Department of Health alerted public health officials in Massachusetts and New York that some of their residents may have come in contact with the rare but highly contagious measles virus when visiting the crowded Super Bowl Village in downtown Indianapolis.

  • Report: Patriots' Tight End Gronkowski has ankle surgery Friday FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski had arthroscopic surgery Friday on the left ankle that hampered him in the Super Bowl.
    Gronkowski, who set an NFL single-season record for tight ends with 17 touchdown receptions, had just two catches for 26 yards in the 21-17 loss to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl in Indianapolis last Sunday. His recovery is expected to last 10-12 weeks and end before the Patriots begin organized team activities in the spring.
