Dr. John Simmons, 81

Tallahassee, Fla. — Dr. John S. Simmons, 81, Professor of English Education and Reading at Florida State University for 40 years, died on February 17, 2013.

Dr. Simmons was born in Gloucester, and graduated from Gloucester High class of 1949. He earned his B.A. degree from Boston University. He then entered the Army as a commissioned officer during the Korean War. He earned his master’s degree and doctorate at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Simmons served as lay reader and usher at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church and was active in his Tallahassee community for many years.

Dr. Simmons is survived by his wife of 30 years, Katie Simmons, and four children, Sheila Greco (Lou) of Tampa, Annette Simmons-Brown (Phil) of Plymouth, Minn., David Lee Simmons (Faith) of Atlanta, Ga., and U.S. Army Maj. Douglas Simmons (Maj. Stephanie White) currently serving in Qatar and Kuwait, respectively; and three stepchildren, Stephen Mayfield (Marjorie) of Bainbridge, Ga., Philip Mayfield (Kimberly) of Windermere Fla., and Katherine McCall (Scott) of Milton Fla., and 11 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Stephen Anthony Simmons and grandson, Pfc. Anthony Warren Simmons.

ARRANGEMENTS: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in the form of contributions to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, Fla. 32308, or to Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, 2015 Fleischmann Road, Tallahassee, FL 32308.

Funeral services for Dr. Simmons will be held Friday, March 1, at 4 p.m., at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Tallahassee, Fla.
