MORGAN HILL, Calif. — Rev. Dr. Jack R. Cavanaugh, 83, died on Saturday afternoon, September 29, at his home in Morgan Hill, Calif., with his family by his side. A memorial service was held in Morgan Hill on October 6. Jack was the husband of Dorothy Scott of Annisquam.
Born in Canada, Jack was the son of the late Edith M. (Stanley) Cavanaugh and the late James J. Cavanaugh, Sr. Jack was a graduate of Gloucester High School in 1947. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Gordon College, Boston, in 1951, and his Master of Divinity degree from Westminster Theological Seminary in 1955. He earned a Master of Philosophy degree from Boston University in 1966 and was a Professor of Philosophy at Gordon College. After moving to California in 1971, he earned a Doctor of Ministries degree from Claremont School of Theology in 1975. He then earned a Master of Counseling degree from California State, Fullerton, in 1979.
Jack held pastorates in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and California. He was able to use his pastoral gifts as a member of Saddleback Church, leading several small groups over the course of 25 years.
After retiring from pastoral ministry, Jack became a real estate broker and founded Commonwealth Real Estate and Mortgage Company.
Jack was a consummate learner. His interests included tennis, chess, and reading. He devoted much of his time and energy toward spending time with his extended family. During his retirement years, Jack enjoyed many travel experiences with his wife, Dorothy.
Jack is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy (Scott) Cavanaugh; sisters, Agnes Puff and Shirley LaFrance (Frank) of Gloucester; brothers, James Cavanaugh, Jr. (Frances) of Massachusetts and Florida, Dennis (Ann) Cavanaugh of Schenectady, N.Y.; sons and daughters, son, James Cavanaugh (Allison) of Greenville, N.C., daughter, Sharon Welch (Edward) of Glenside, Pa., son, Jack Cavanaugh, Jr. of Sacramento, Calif., son, Scott Cavanaugh (Renee) of Morgan Hill, Calif., son, Bruce Cavanaugh of Morgan Hill, Calif, daughter, Jane Wall (Ken) of San Jose, Calif; 19 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Jack is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Memorial Service in celebration of Jack's life is planned for early summer 2013, by his family, at The Calvary Chapel Baptist Church, Gloucester.
