Essex — Ruth E. (Mears) Lyons-Montgomery, 91, of Essex, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, October 9, 2013, at Beverly Hospital.
She was born in Clinton, Mass., on December 10, 1921, and was the daughter of the late Jerome Mears and Carrie (Fish) Mears of Hudson, Mass.
She graduated as a registered surgical nurse from Waltham Hospital, and went on to actively serve in both World War II and the Korean War with the U.S. Navy.
After serving in the Navy, she worked as head nurse at Beverly Hospital. She married the late Lambert Hyons-Montgomery in 1953, relocating to northern Virginia, and spending the next 32 years raising a family.
Ruth was a witty, vibrant and larger-than-life wife and mother, a joy to both know and love.
She is survived by her three children, Harriett-Ellen Oppenborn and her husband, Chad, of Fallbrook, Calif., Susan Marie Donaldson and her husband, Cliff, of Sudlersville, Md., and John Jerome Lyons-Montgomery and his wife, Thelma, of Fairfax, Va.; and nine grandchildren collectively.
ARRANGEMENTS: A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, October 15, at 11:00 a.m., in Spring Street Cemetery, Essex. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the First Congregational Church, 39 Main Street, Essex, MA 01929, which has been exceptionally loving and supportive.
