Capt. Joseph S. Parco, 80


Gloucester, MA — Capt. Joseph S. Parco, 80, husband of Mary (Mistretta) Parco, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday evening, September 9, 2013, surrounded by his loving family after a lengthy illness.

Born in Gloucester on August 11, 1933, he was the son of the late Salvatore and Maria (Favaloro) Parco. Joseph attended Gloucester Public Schools. At age 15, he left school to fish full-time to help support his family.

During his long career in the fishing industry, he worked on many commercial fishing trawlers, eventually becoming owner and captain of Jeanne D’arc, Two Friends, and retiring with Wind & Spirit.

He was a well-accomplished fisherman and was well respected by all who knew him.

After his retirement, Joe enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an incredible cook and loved sharing his food with friends and family.

Joe also enjoyed rides with his dear friend, Anthony “Chubbie” Loiacano, who was always there to get him out for a breath of fresh air.

Joe was a quiet, kind and loving husband and father. He will be missed by all who knew him. He will be forever treasured for giving his family life long traditions and values that they will continue to share for many generations.

Joe was a lifelong member of the St. Peter’s Club and a member of Our Lady of Good Voyage Church.

The Parco family would like to thank the VNA Care & Hospice, especially to Vickiy Wilson and her team, for all the wonderful care extended to Joe during his illness.

In addition to his wife, Mary, he is survived by their five children, Salvatore and his wife, Andrea (Sherman), Maria, wife of Stephen Ragusa, Angela, wife of Carleton Grace, Annette, wife of Mark Duval, Anthony and his wife Kelli (Merchant); grandchildren, Michael Lewis, Stephen Ragusa and his wife, Abigail (Verga), Christopher Grace and his fianceé, Nicole McCollum, Michelle Blair and her husband, Jonathan, Nicole Ragusa and her fiancé, Anthony Pizzimenti, Isabela and Anthony Parco; great-granddaughter, Grasyn Lewis; his sisters, Gerolima Lovasco, Ida Bammarito, Carmella Scola; sister-in-law, Rosalie (Linquata) Parco; brother-in-law, Salvatore Mistretta and wife, Sally, of White City, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Anthony; his sister, Mary; and brothers-in-law, Capt. Sam Frontiero, Harry Bammarito, Capt. Larry Scola, and Capt. Peter Lovasco.

ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral Mass will be held in St. Ann’s Church on Friday, September 13, at 10:30 a.m. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend.

The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery.

There are no visiting hours.
