Barbara (Tobey) Pickard


Ipswich — Barbara (Tobey) Pickard of Hodges Way, Ipswich, died Sunday, May 12, 2013, at the Lafayette Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Facility in Marblehead. She was the wife of the late Jack Pickard, who died in 2006.

Barbara was born March 8, 1924, in Gloucester to Marion (Ross) Tobey and Howard Harvey Tobey. She was raised and educated in Gloucester. Following graduation, she took the Civil Service Exam and worked at the rationing board during World War II. Married on February 14, 1947, the Pickards moved to Ipswich where she raised two daughters and resided until her recent illness. For 35 of those years she was the bookkeeper for the family’s oil business.

Barb and Jack enjoyed entertaining friends and family on their sailboat Varuna. She also enjoyed quilting and braiding and hooking rugs. Barbara will be remembered for her sense of humor, generous heart and wonderful pies.

She is survived by her daughter, Jan Taggart and her husband, Howard of Marblehead; her son-in-law, Thomas Buinicky of Claremont, N.H.; grandchildren, Ian Taggart and his wife, Maryann of Providence, R.I., Jessica Taggart of Bogota, Colombia, Amy Buinicky, of Somerville, and Alison Buinicky of Brooklyn, N.Y., and many loving nieces and nephews. Barbara was predeceased in 2000 by her daughter, Jill Buinicky formerly of Claremont; her brothers, John, of Florida, Robert of Gloucester, and George (Lindy) of Rockport; and her sisters, Florence Ingersoll and Janet Tyne both of Gloucester, Phyllis Adams of Nova Scotia and Marion Drohan of Beverly.

ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, graveside in the Highland Cemetery, Town Farm Road., Ipswich. Family and friends are welcomed. Visiting hours will be held Thursday 5 to 8 p.m. in the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High St., Ipswich.
