Alexandria, MN — Donald Eugene Olsen, 64, formerly of Rockport, Mass., passed away in Alexandria, Minn., on February 19, 2013, of complications from bone cancer and diabetes.
He was born in Gloucester, Mass., on June 15, 1948. In 1966, Don graduated from Mankato High School, Mankato, Minn., and went on to Mankato State University where he received his BS degree in Geography in 1970. He also earned an AA Degree in Marine Sciences from Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute.
Don held a wide variety of positions throughout his life including Co-op Education Coordinator at the University of Maine, Farmington; oil rig supply boat operator in Morgan City, La.; commercial fisherman in the Gulf of Maine; and was the Waterfront Administrator for the City of Portland, Maine, including the oversight of the Portland Fish Auction Pier. Don also worked as a purchasing agent for several machine shops located in Maine and Massachusetts.
Don was an outdoorsman who enjoyed duck and pheasant hunting as well as fresh and salt water fishing. He was an avid reader, trivia buff and photographer who had several published photographs. Don was a past member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and Son of a Legionnaire member of the North Mankato Legion Post #518.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Einar and Vera Olsen. He is survived by his brother, Stephen (Lucy) Olsen; nieces and nephews, Xanthe (Steve) Walker, Stephanie (Brad) Buffington, and Carl (Amber) Olsen; and great-nieces and nephews, Laura, Jacob, Carson and Natalie Buffington and Norman Walker.
ARRANGEMENTS: A graveside gathering will be held on Saturday, May 18, at 10 a.m. at the Seaside Cemetery, Gloucester.
