Gloucester, MA — Rosaria “Sally” (Mazzeo) Ciulla, 94, of Gloucester, passed peacefully in her home on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, surrounded by all that she loved. She was the wife of the late Thomas Anthony "Masi" Ciulla, a commercial fisherman his entire life. They lived a fairy tale life of love for 52 years.
She was born in East Boston on January 21, 1919, to the late Domenico and Caterina Mazzeo, who immigrated to America from Salice, Sicily. Shortly after she was born, her family went back to Italy where she grew up in the home of her ancestors until she was a teen.
She lived a long life in the old ways of her heritage, deeply devoted to her faith, family and roots. She was amazingly creative, an expert seamstress, working in Boston until she was married. She was an amazing cook. Growing and canning her "all natural" food was her joy. Along with her vegetable gardens, she grew prize winning flowers from seed and bulb until she was 90 years old.
She was a devoted mother, a beloved aunt, a cherished sister, a loving friend, and godmother to so many.
She is survived by her daughter, Rosemary Ciulla of Gloucester; most cherished nieces, Rose Provost, Rosemarie Guarassi, Catherine Mazzeo; nephews, Philip Mazzeo and Anthony Ciulla, who she adored and took such good care of her, along with sisters-in-law, Betty Ciulla, Julia Guarassi, Frances Mazzeo, and many other nieces and nephews; her special Angel, our cousin and her nurse, Diane Crudden, who took such special care of her.
She was predeceased by her siblings, Grace Celona and husband Stefano, Philip Mazzeo and wife Grace, Nicolas Mazzeo and wife Margaret, Domenic Mazzeo, Mary Mazzeo; beloved nieces, Theresa Savio, Catherine Mazzeo and nephew, Domenic Mazzeo.
