Ipswich — Margaret Foss Wood, 96, of Great Neck, Ipswich, passed away on August 21, 2013, after a brief illness. She was the widow of the late Stanley W. Wood.
Born in Bridgeport, Conn., on August 8, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Rudolph and Grace E. (Jenkins) Foss. Raised in Essex, she graduated as a registered nurse from Children's Hospital and then received her Bachelor of Science from Simmons College. In her nursing career, she was employed in the Harvard Pediatric Study in Cambridge, as well as a public health nurse with the Boston VNA. During World War II, she served as an Ensign in the Navy Nurse Corp. Margaret lived the life of a true renaissance woman. From a young age she felt drawn to a number of interests: the delight of the outdoors, reading, the gifts of writing, painting, and music, and the exhilaration of the sea.
She married and raised her son, Stanley, in Needham and summered on Great Neck in Ipswich, which eventually became her permanent home.
She is survived by one son, Stanley W. Wood, Jr. of Ipswich. She was the sister of the late David Foss formerly of Hamilton, and of Ethel MacIntosh, formerly of Newmarket, N.H.
ARRANGEMENTS: A private funeral service will be held graveside in the Spring Street Cemetery, Essex. Arrangements are under the directions of the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to Leukemia Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O.
