Westford, MA — Richard A. “Dick” Oakes, 75, of Westford, formerly of Gloucester, died on Monday, August 20, 2012 at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington. He was the beloved husband of the late Jean P. (Amero) Oakes.
Born in Gloucester on August 2, 1937, he was the son of the late George A. and Elizabeth (Barnard) Oakes.
Dick was a graduate of Gloucester High School, Class of 1955 and served in the U.S. Navy from July 1957 to July 1959.
For over 44 years, Dick worked for Raytheon as a Hardware Configuration Manager until his retirement in 2003.
Dick was an avid Boston sports fan and coach in the Gloucester Little League for many years. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing, working in his garden, and driving his Jaguar convertible.
He was a member of the Nabnasset Lake Country Club in Westford, and longtime member and past commander of the Capt. Lester S. Wass Post #3 Gloucester American Legion.
He is survived by his three children, Richard A. Oakes Jr. of Winthrop, Steven M. Oakes and his wife Meg (Burns) Oakes and their children Michael and Emily of Needham, Lisa (Oakes) MacKinnon and her husband Michael and their children Erin, Mikayla and Mikey of Marshfield; his sister, Barbara Aptt of Albany, NY and his companion, Kathleen O'Loughlin of Westford.
ARRANGEMENTS: His Funeral will be held from the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St., Gloucester on Monday, August 27th at 8:45 a.m. followed by a Mass in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church on Monday at 9:30 am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 4 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester.
