Robert A. Sudbay, 81

Robert A. Sudbay, husband of Ann (Grivich) Sudbay, of West Bloomfield, Michigan, passed away on Saturday, February 4 at his home, with his loving family at his side, following a brief illness at the age of 81.

Robert was born in Gloucester on February 6, 1930 to the late James A. and Margaret M. (Fraser) Sudbay. He graduated from Gloucester High School where he was an officer of the ROTC and played on the varsity hockey team. After high school Robert graduated from Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont where he also played on the college hockey team. Following graduation from Norwich, he was commissioned in the United States Army and served his country in Europe.

After his service in the Army, Robert began a long and very successful career with the Pontiac Motor Division of General Motors Corporation. In 1990 he retired from General Motors after becoming head of the Dealer Organization Department. In retirement, Robert enjoyed golf, fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a kind and thoughtful man who always put others' needs before his own.

In addition to his wife, Ann, of 54 years, Robert is survived by his loving children, Robert J., husband of Donna, and Stephen, husband of Patricia. He was the loving grandfather of Robert S., Tyler, and Trevor. In addition, he is survived by his brother, Donald, and his wife Phyllis, and his sister, Barbara Porper. Robert was predeceased by his brother, Dr. James A. Sudbay and his wife Mary Helen.

ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral Mass was held in West Bloomfield ,MI at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church on Friday February 10th. Memorial contributions may be directed to: Karmanos Cancer Institute, 4100 John Rd, Detroit, MI 48201.

Bill was the youngest man in the tuna fisheries to attain the rating of Chief Engineer, and he fished out of Somora. He attended school in San Diego, CA. Gloucester, MA and Las Vegas, NV. Bill is survived by his mother, Cora Montez Brown, and his uncle, John Sutton of Gloucester, MA. He is also survived by his special cousins, Jim Lobel of San Diego and Margaret York of Gloucester, Ma. In addition he is also survived by many cousins, nephews and nieces along with many friends. Bill is preceded in death by his brother, Marlo Mamede, who was lost at sea, his father, William F. Mamede of San Diego, CA. and his stepfather. Ralph K. Brown of Gloucester, MA.

  • Repair to close main route between Manchester, Essex Repairs to a failed culvert on School Street in Manchester will close School Street and Southern Avenue in Essex at the town line starting Tuesday. The stretch may remain closed through Friday.
    The street's closed at the site where Manchester Public Works has tried to repair a culvert running under School Street that started to sink around three weeks ago, said Essex Police Chief Peter Silva.

  • Hornets get second crack at Newburyport The Manchester Essex girls lacrosse team was happy to learn that it drew Newburyport as its opponent in the first round of the Division 2 North state tournament.
    No. 10 Manchester Essex (10-6) has seen No. 7 Newburyport (10-5) before in the regular season, with the Clippers coming away with a 12-9 win. The loss to Newburyport on May 10, however, is actually the reason why the Hornets are champing at the bit to play their Cape Ann League rivals one more time. The two teams will meet again Tuesday in Newburyport (4:00 p.m.) with a berth in the Division 2 North Quarter Finals on the line. The winner will meet the winner of No. 2 Ipswich and No. 15 Tewksbury.

The Hornets also got surprising news that they will be playing in the Division 4 North State Tournament.
