  • William "Bill" Leslie Carroll, 67

    Kensington, CA — William "Bill" Leslie died on Monday, March 11, 2013, at his home in Kensington, Calif., after a four month fight with cancer. Born June 12, 1945, in Detroit, Mich., to Lloyd and Jane (Marsh) Carroll of Ontario, Canada, Bill moved to Dallas, Texas, when he was in high school. He was the first in his family to earn a college degree, graduating from Rice University in 1967. He moved to College Park, Md., for graduate work in Physics at the University of Maryland, and went to work for the National Bureau of Standards. In 1977, Bill joined the newly formed Passive Solar Group at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (LBL), and completed a doctoral degree with the Energy and Resources Group at the University of California, Berkeley. Bill retired from the Lab in 2005 following a distinguished career at LBL developing simulation programs for analyzing energy efficiency in building design. During retirement, Bill embraced a bi-coastal life, spending large parts of the year at his second home in Rockport. He will always be remembered for his scientific curiosity, his practical and technical capabilities, his ironic wit, and his kind and generous spirit. Bill is survived by his wife, Barbara Sternfeld, his son and daughter-in law, Michael and JoLynn, his sister Linda, and his grandchildren, Julia and Phillip. He is predeceased by a sister, Lois Kunkle.

She moved to Sarasota from Gloucester after retirement as a machine operator from Rule Industries in 1993.
