Letter: Presidency deserves respect amid protests

To the editor:

Considering how incensed I was by the two young men "parading" in front of our Post Office last Wednesday, I was very glad to see some coverage in the Times and to see that at least a few other people felt the same as I. (The Times, Thursday, Feb. 16).

I had passed the "scene" on my way to an appointment and was flabbergasted. I immediately announced aloud to myself that I would revisit the scene on my way home, which I did.

The youngest of the two "men" came up to me as I approached him. I told him how appalled I was that our president would be displayed with a Hitler moustache ... he appeared smug. He began a kind of monosyllabic litany of impending war, impeachment, etc.

I ultimately asked him how old he was ... he asked how old I was, in return. I told him, then repeated my question. He said he was 23 and wondered if I "knew what war was." That didn't deserve an answer.

My regret was that I didn't talk to the older placard carrier ... who was no doubt part of the group that's basically brainwashing this kid.

I suggested to him that he might re-evaluate his political thinking in a few years.

Yes, I do respect the right of free expression, but the lack of respect for our presidency really reviles me.
