Letter: Illuminating example of grass roots success

Gloucester Daily Times

---- — To the editor:

As chair of Rockport’s Economic Development Committee, and as a private citizen, I wanted to applaud the amazing work done by Tim and Sue Collins in organizing Rockport’s Illumination Night Saturday night.

Their positive energy, fund-raising prowess, and upbeat vision for the day allowed them to effectively handle all the technical requirements, collaboration with town departments, and community outreach.

In keeping with the town’s cultural district designation, the linkage to the Rotary’s Lobsterfest and student-based musical entertainment in Dock Square gave visitors and residents alike a total day of food and entertainment to enjoy. It was easy for the EDC to publicize, and brought a well-behaved crowd into town to patronize our inns, restaurants, galleries, and shops.

Although it will take time to analyze what the larger business impact has been and where things could be improved, it is already evident that Illumination Night brightened the spirits as well as the public profile of Rockport and really enhanced the late summer season.

Now if we could just figure out how Tim and Sue arranged the perfect weather, we’d really be golden!

Thanks again to this special couple for a truly stellar effort.
