To the editor:
The property at 33 Commercial St. has been in the news a lot lately.
I lived at 33 Commercial St. for many years.
One day, a crate was delivered there. It was big and heavy. My father, Capt. Salvatore Favazza, and his wife Maria, together with a few of their neighbors, opened the crate and there was the box with the statue of St. Peter. The excitement of this statue arriving on Commercial Street was felt all around the Fort.
Here was our statue for our "Festa."
A group of fishermen and my father carried it to a storefront window on Commercial Street, a building next to our house, where it could be seen by all the fishermen and their families.
Commercial Street was a very busy and exciting place to grow up in and the Fiesta was going to take place on this street — a street leading to the historic Fort.
All of this was many years ago. How many? Eight-five!
What will this street look like in the year 2020? How will we remember the 2012 Gloucester City Council? Maybe a council who got kicked around by a "golden sneaker?"
Come to the Fort this year to join us for our 85th Fiesta — and take some time to walk down Commercial Street and imagine how it was 85 years ago.
