---- — To the editor:
Michael Cook (letters, the Times, Tuesday, May 21) ought to double check his facts.
Liberal or progressive groups that applied for tax-exempt status were fast tracked for approval, and that includes the president’s half brother, who received his 501C status in less than nine months while Tea Party groups waiting for more than two years for an acceptance letter or a denial from the IRS received neither.
If Michael has ever filed for 501 status he would know that the application is about 30 pages of very probing questions, and takes roughly three full eight hour days to complete. When you’re paying someone to complete the application, that’s a lot of billable hours.
Also, the IRS did not scrutinize the applications of those groups calling themselves, “Occupy Wall Street.” which were far left political anarchists. Yet the IRS just left them alone.
Yes, Tea Party groups are right wing political activists; however they carried out their activism within the rule of law. “Occupy Wall Street” groups broke more laws than you can count.
