To the editor:
In Massachusetts, the Governor’s Council plays an important constitutional role.
While it is the job of every governor to nominate people to become judges, clerk magistrates and parole board members, the Governor’s Council must then approve each nomination. Because of this, it is important that members of the council know how the courts work, know the legal system and know the duties expected of judges in the different courts.
Donald Bumiller has that experience. He knows the difference between the District, Probate, Superior and Land courts. He knows how the courts work, and he possesses what I consider to be the most important characteristics of a Governor’s Councilor — respectful and informed independence. Other candidates may talk a good game, but Donald Bumiller has the experience and knowledge to provide the necessary leadership to properly represent us on the council.
I have worked with him in connection with the operation and management of the Essex County Bar Advocates Program, the legal entity charged with supplying legal representation to indigent people in need of legal services in the district courts of the commonwealth involving criminal matters. I have found him to be knowledgeable, energetic and above all willing to help those in need.
Please join me in voting for Donald Bumiller in the Democratic Primary on Thursday, Sept. 6.
