Letter: An exagerrated shutdown legacy

To the editor:

Mary Jane Lane wrote in her letter (the Times, Friday, Oct. 18) that the recent Government shutdown “has cost us $24,000,000,000,000.”

She then instructed us to “count the zeros.”

I dutifully counted the zeros and found that she was off by something over $23 trillion dollars.

She may have been referring to the minimum $24 trillion debt forecast for the country by 2023, described by the Cato Institute as the “Obama Legacy.”
