To the editor:
Concerning the MBTA's proposed elimination of weekend service on the Rockport line: It is so obviously a time in our nation's history when we need to build public transportation that it seems completely ridiculous to consider closing any of it down.
We need to rely less on cars. What about the many in the vaunted 99 percent and less who can't even afford cars? And the teenagers who can't drive?
Cape Ann gets many tourist visitors by train. Cape Ann residents spend money in Boston via train. My family actually takes the commuter rail to the airport.
The commuter rail makes Cape Ann a cool place to live. I have noticed increasing numbers of young adults in Gloucester, living on Cape Ann, and working down the line.
I emailed the MBTA to voice my concern. The respondent told me he was glad I wrote, but that the MBTA is still looking at closing down weekend service.
I have written to state Rep. Ann-Margaret Ferrante, state Sen. Bruce Tarr and to the governor asking them to support public transportation.
