Letter: Sharing Markey's hesitancy

To the editor:

Normally, I would likely share the Times editorial point of view that our senators and congresspersons need to stand up and be counted one way or the other (the Times, Monday, Sept. 9).

But I find the questions surrounding action on Syria sufficiently profound and perplexing that I share Ed Markey’s need to look further before he committed.

I hope, now that time has elapsed, that he will find reason to take the Obama position. In a report in this week’s New Yorker magazine, Steve Coll puts it well: “There are red lines even in a war as devoid of clarity as Syria’s. The best available evidence is that on Aug. 21 Bashar al-Assad’s forces crossed to the other side.”
