Editorial: Visitors assessing Rockport's schools

The arrival of a 16-member New England accreditation team to the Rockport Public Schools this week shouldn’t be seen as anything to fear; by all accounts, Rockport’s schools continued to do well, and will no doubt gain a new accreditation that all districts routinely seek.

Yet it’s interesting to note the tactics the visiting educators are exploring — notably, speaking with parents and teachers alike, following students through their schedules for the day, asking parents what they believe a student’s grade reflects, and seeing what areas parents may cite as concerns.

Through talks with parents and interacting with students, this New England assessment panel should indeed get a good picture of not only the education schools are delivering, but of how it’s being received. That’s really what counts.
