To the editor:

I first met Ann-Margaret Ferrante last year when I was working with a group of volunteers to uphold a ballot question from the 2008 election.

The first thing I noticed about her was how seriously she took her job and her constituents. During our hour-long meeting, I found Rep. Ferrante to be approachable, fair-minded, and genuinely interested in our cause and what we had to say.

In an era when so many of our elected officials seem remote and disinterested in the people they are representing, Ann-Margaret's commitment to her constituents and her accessibility are impressive.

Editorial: Pleasure boat fiasco is straw that should sink NOAA leaders

In one instance, a boat operator, "with wife and friend aboard ..." needed help because the vessel was "running out of fuel in canal."
Another operator became "stranded with wife in Puget Sound en route to restaurant." In a third, an engine explosion "attributable to operator error" knocked the $300,000 vessel out of commission altogether, spawning costly repairs.

Midweek Musings: Contemplation and Thomas Merton

Some of us recently celebrated the birthday of a great spiritual and religious figure in 20th century U.S. and world history, the Catholic monk, Thomas Merton.
Though a Cistercian monk from 1941 to 1968, residing at Gethsemane monastery in Kentucky, Merton became world-famous and a prolific author and correspondent. He wrote, especially in the early years, about the spiritual life and the value of "desert wisdom."

The day boat fishing fleet is like the canary in the catch share coal mine — we may be the first to go, but not the last.
The "fat cats" left in the fishing industry may not be concerned about little birds, but we are indicative of the climate.
