Well, we sure got ourselves into a mess!
At a recent selectmen's meeting we had a discussion about delaying our annual Town Meeting because this year it falls within Passover and over Easter weekend.
In an attempt to try and delay it to a time that the most number of residents could attend we moved it to April 14. At the time of our discussion, the town administrator had been playing phone tag with the town moderator. So we decided to vote to move it because we really wanted it moved and then confirm with the moderator and move again if necessary.
Since that meeting, we have come to learn that our new date fell at the start of school vacation, which creates a host of issues, as well as puts into jeopardy whether or not an item voted on at Town Meeting can still make it onto the May 8 ballot.
On Thursday, the board met again and was joined by the town moderator and town clerk. We came up with and voted on a solution that we think is a good one and will encourage the greatest attendance.
Our Annual Town Meeting will be held Monday, April 9 at 6:30 p.m., and if necessary, continue to Tuesday, April 10, at 6:30 p.m.
Delaying the meeting until Monday actually does several positive things for us. It keeps the meeting clear of both holidays; it keeps the meeting from a Saturday in the spring when, we all know, if it is nice out, people like to take advantage of the outdoors; and it gives us a chance to try out an evening meeting format, which we do for Fall Town Meeting.
As an added bonus, we won't have to close the dump. Plus, this date also allows for ample time for an item to make it onto the ballot if necessary.
I apologize for any confusion this has caused. While I know that no date is perfect for everyone, we really do hope that this date and time works for as many residents as possible.
Participation by as many residents as possible is what makes Town Meeting the most successful. I look forward to seeing you April 9!
