To the editor:
While the Legislature contemplates fining individuals for feeding wildlife (Times, Page 1, Wedneday, Feb. 8), other cultures such as India pursue a different trajectory.
As Dr. Vandana Shiva explained in the book "Queen of the Sun, What are the Bees Telling Us:"
"As it says in one of the Upanishads, everything is food, everything is someone else's food, and the highest sacred duty is to provide food in abundance and bounty for all beings in your sphere of influence. Not just your child, but all beings in your sphere of influence.
"We still have traditions in some villages in India where a bell is rung to ask if anyone is still hungry and where the family will not eat until they have first fed the cow, the hungry person on the street, the dog, and of course always some food is left for the ants. Even those beautiful mandalas that are made in front of Indian huts are actually food for the ants.
Pesticides, GMOs, microwave radiation from wireless technologies, and bad policies sourced from greed are destroying the food supply.
The only solution is a shift in consciousness. If we don't want turkeys in yards, we can still leave food for them in the woods where they live.
Mary Poppins knew better, "Feed the Birds."
