Letter: Our schools need more security resources

Gloucester Daily Times

---- — To the editor:

Our resources for the future are the investment in our children by parents, volunteers, administration, teachers, staff and the community — a community that especially in light of the recent Newtown, Conn., shootings should include more than one resource officer for our schools.

Salem, for example, is a city rich in history, tourism and diversity — yet, due to budget cuts, the three resource officers in partnership with the Salem Police Department have been cut down over the years.

Those cuts, like those in other cities, undermine the invaluable richness of our children, our schools, and everyone associated with creating a place of not only education, but a place of safety for our kids.

Throughout the years, officers have not only watched over generations of our school students, they have also spent quality time with the children, giving to them security, help and hope, as well as education related to what can be at times the harsh realities of our world.

Well, the harsh reality is that cutting anything that helps parents, volunteers, administration, teachers, staff, the community and students is something that, in today’s environment, is a sacrifice that financially should not be on the table.

Safety and security for all related to our school systems need to be implemented to the fullest.
