To the editor:
This is an open letter to the families and kids who went to the Gloucester Community Arts Charter School.
I taught art at the Rockport High School in the late 1980s, and at the Gloucester High School in the early 1990s. I know first-hand how doing well in art can help a kid do well in other subjects.
I know you’ve taken your lumps, but you did learn how to fight intelligently for what you believed in. There is no reason to stop now just because the scenery has changed. The Gloucester school system desperately needs changing or there wouldn’t have been a charter school to begin with.
It’s up to you to insist on change. Kids do a lot better if they have a say in what’s going on.
Heraclitus said: “The Sun is new each day.” And so it is.
Good luck, and hang in there.
It can all be for the better.
