Letter: Rockport residents find safe haven at RHS

To the editor:

What a blessing to live in Rockport.

There we were, huddled together in the hallways of the Rockport High School Apartments, hoping to stay put until electricity was restored. It became evident as the temperature continued to fall that we would have to seek shelter elsewhere.

But police were notified and in a short time we were transported to the high school. It was a first for many of us who did not know what to expect. We were delighted with what we experienced.

‘Round the tables, we were surrounded with familiar faces. We were checked in, fed hot sandwiches, coffee, tea, fresh fruit and later a turkey dinner. Comfortable cots were set up and available for use. Everyone was friendly and helpful; the shelter and its operation was carried out by local people.

Lt. Mark Schmink is Rockport’s emergency management director who oversaw the running of this operation. With his leadership and the Police, Fire, Public Works, Ambulance and School departments — and in addition to citizen volunteers and government people — a pleasant and safe haven was provided.

Thank you to the many responders who offered their time, expertise, goodwill and helpfulness to those in need; your many acts of kindness are deeply appreciated.
