The Navy in Rockport

The Navy landed in Rockport this weekend.

But the service’s primary divisions were some two dozen visiting midshipmen and the Northeast Navy Pops Ensemble. And the Navy’s only “exercises” carried out were games of kickball with some local kids at Evans Field, and a softball game with Rockport’s police and firefighters Saturday evening.

The visit was the focus of Rockport’s annual Navy Weekend, with the visiting service personnel and their advisers staying with local families while also getting a taste of Rockport hospitality through events like a Sunday pancake breakfast at Brackett’s Ocean View restaurant as well.

The tradition and the town’s ties to the Navy dates back decades — to a time when Rockport was listed among the Navy’s ports of call visited by the Great White Fleet of the early 1900s — but the current version of the host weekend was revived in 2007.
