Letter: Overzealous ticketing discourages customers

I am a summer resident of Lanesville in Gloucester and frequently shop in Rockport.

Recently, while getting my hair cut at Walter’s on Main Street, I received a parking ticket.

I am not a happy camper. Walter works fast. His shop is busy. It’s hard to predict when you’ll be out. I over stayed my well-fed meter (it was immediately adjacent to his shop) and received a $15 parking ticket.

In my many years in Gloucester and Rockport, I’ve grown to consider Walter’s barber shop a welcome institution. It is an institution I enjoy frequenting.

Ticketing cars parked in front of his shop is not a good practice. Speaking personally, I can tell you it discourages return customers.

Frankly, I can’t think of a way the town of Rockport could do a bigger disservice to its merchants than by ticketing the cars of their customers. Why is it that every level of government focuses on abusing its citizens and determining how much tribute it can extract, rather than how it could best serve the community at large?

Rockport should rethink its parking policy and develop a policy that encourages rather than discourages customers from doing business in Rockport.
