Editorial: GHS students' tasty benefit

Gloucester Daily Times

---- — One of Cape Ann’s tastiest and most popular fund-raisers is on tap for tonight — and it’s one that has a special and youthful twist.

The event is the sixth annual Pizza Taste-Off competition, which is slated to run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at Cruiseport Gloucester. If you haven’t checked out one of the first five versions, it features more than a dozen Gloucester and Cape Ann restaurants and pizzerias competing for the honor of who presents the best pizza. And the winners are chosen by voting for those who show up to sample the many tastes.

But the Taste-Off champion is far from the only winner. All proceeds raised at the event — with tickets sold at the door and priced at $8 for adults and $4 for children – go to benefit the Cape Ann Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. And the entire Taste-Off is organized and presented by a group of Gloucester High School students.

Those students are members of the GHS Interact Club, essentially a youth affiliate of the Gloucester Rotary Club. And the entire program not only offers fun for the participants and funds for a good cause, but some outstanding organizational and community service experience for the students, who not only work with the vendors, but handle publicity for the event and then deal with up to 300 pizza lovers to boot.

It is, in other words, not only a fun event, but an outstanding community youth project as well — and all for a good cause. Give it a look — and a taste or two tonight. You’ll like it.
