To the editor:
During a recent trip to Rockport, I was saddened to see the former Cape Ann Tool Company eyesore still standing and hear that nothing has come from the development of the site.
What I did see were several new homes being built. How can the town still allow new homes to be built when there are so many homes that are built that are for sale?
Maybe the town should do something really positive with the tool company. New England is so rich with history, especially Rockport.
If the town was interested, maybe they should purchase the land, tear down that mess and create a Cape Ann Heritage Center.
How about a place where the tourists could learn about the granite industry, the fisherman of Gloucester and the lobstermen from Rockport. Have a decent aquarium, a museum, a gift shop, restaurant and a place to sit and enjoy the harbor?
Rockport needs a place kids can go when it rains or it snows, and the town would have a steady stream to money coming in. Plus in this economy, it would certainly create many jobs.
Does the town really need another condo, house or mansion?
