Editorial: Already looking toward Lobsters '14

It’s hard to believe that, less than three weeks after Manchester, Gloucester and other tennis fans welcomed the Boston Lobsters for their season opener, we’re already bidding Cape Ann’s first major league sports team adieu for another year.

Yet that indeed is the schedule for World Team Tennis, an innovative and fan-friendly format for the sport that has to squeeze a full league season that runs from coast to coast into essentially a month after Wimbledon and before the pros start to ramp up for the U.S. Open that starts at the end of August.

Still, brief as it was, the Lobsters presence at the Manchester Athletic Club’s temporary Joan Norton Tennis Center beefed up the visibility of Cape Ann as a sports venue, and added significantly to our area’s summer sports scene.

That was especially the case on that memorable Monday night (July 15) when the Lobsters served up legitimate net stars Mark Philippoussis, Martina Hingis and special guest spectator Bille Jean King for Cape Ann fans, who filled the house some 1,800 strong.

Thanks, Lobsters, for a fun inaugural Cape Ann season, and we look forward to many happy returns — and serves — in the years ahead.
