---- — To the editor:
“To strive determinedly to achieve something; opportunity to succeed by great effort; to repel with effort; to struggle against great odds.”
These are just a few definitions of “fighting,” according to Webster’s dictionary.
Sure, there are other definitions, but fighting to win does not always mean throwing punches. It takes a fighting spirit to be a winner.
When a doctor says, “he’s a fighter,” referencing a patient recovering from a disease, he is talking about his spirit. And there is another kind of fighting — the kind that our brave men and women in the military do. They fight for our freedom to sing the National Anthem and fly the American flag at football games.
When a ball carrier in a high school football game is trying to gain a few yards or break through for a touchdown, he is “fighting” for every inch.
Let’s keep the fighting spirit alive. Let’s bring back “Fighting Fishermen football” and put the spirit back in the game.
