Letter: Lawsuit can't scare parents off charter school

To the editor:

I have recently been subject to a bombardment of negativity in the political world.

It seems everywhere we turn, on the TV, in the papers and in "word on the street," people are charged up about politics and people dealing with each other in adversely negative ways. What a bummer.

There are so many cliché©s I would like to throw out there to address the most recent letter and story regarding the infamous charter school lawsuit. (The Times, Thursday, Feb. 2).

I think most educated common sense-oriented people out there know that this lawsuit is now over. It had its day and now things are moving forward. But, alas, say it ain't so, we are in the appellate court. Really? Really.

So here is what I really want to say to parents in Gloucester.

It is so important that you know the Gloucester Community Arts Charter School has received its go ahead to move forward, it's got the green light and you should feel free to check it out without concern for the "lawsuit."

The lawsuit is going on partly as a scare tactic, to avert families from choosing this great school for their children. Don't be swayed. Do what is right for your individual families.

One of the things that I love most about schools like the charter is that they are being monitored. They are expected to do some amazing wonderful things with children and if they don't, they get shut down. They need to be accountable in a whole different kind of way.

So let's give this charter school the time it deserves to work with our children and our community to do what it was set out to do — educate.

I know it's easy to get sucked in; I've been caught reading the scoop on Mitt and Newt and their wacky escapades. But please, pay no attention to that man behind the curtain and let's get on with the business at hand.

The GCACS is accepting enrollment of children from grades K-8 for the next school year right now. I can tell you from my own experience, my daughter Nora has done so well this year academically and socially and is always happy to go to school.

The other day when she was sick and had to stay home, she was sad to miss school.
